Half way there

Happy win-aversary Canada! It was two years ago today that millions of Canadians gathered around televisions all over the world to watch the gold medal matchup against the United States on our home soil in the 2010 Olympic games. Those who watched were fortunate enough to witness Chris Cuthbert's iconic call of Sidney Crosby's "golden goal". It's hard not to get goosebumps when re-watching that, isn't it?

Speculation in sports is one of my favourite games, so in light of that let me present to you Keon to Dion's projected lineup (in alphabetical order, and by position) for the Team Canada roster at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia!

Goaltenders: Marc-Andre Fleury, Carey Price, Cam Ward

Defence: Drew Doughty, Kris Letang, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, Brent Seabrook, Marc Staal, Shea Weber

Forwards: Patrice Bergeron, Logan Couture, Sidney Crosby (C), Jordan Eberle, Claude Giroux, Jarome Iginla (A), Milan Lucic, Brendan Morrow, Corey Perry, Tyler Seguin, Steven Stamkos, Martin St. Louis, Jonathan Toews (A)

As it always is, Canada could likely submit a second roster that would be equally competitive to the first, and cuts such as: Michael Del Zotto, Brad Marchand, and James Neal were difficult to make, but it's hard not to argue that this roster provides the important elements that a successful Olympic team needs. Scoring flare is provided by Stamkos, Couture, Giroux, and Eberle. Leadership and experience can be provided by Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla, Martin St. Louis, and Jonathan Toews. Grit and shutdown men you ask? Look to Milan Lucic, Brendan Morrow, and Corey Perry. There is a great balance of age and youth, skill and defensive awareness, grit and speed. The defence is as sound as it gets, and the goaltenders are likely the only three options.

This could very likely be the roster that Canada submits in two years, but as always there will be surprises and changes that will occur in the time before the team is assembled. Those in charge will be prepared to select the best roster available and there's no doubt that Canada will be in the running for the 2014 gold medal.

But in the time until then, let's speculate!

What does your 2014 roster look like?
